Week Four: Homepage Content Checklist for Small Business Websites
People form an opinion about a website in around 50 milliseconds — long before they've actually read a single word. For context, that's roughly the attention span of a teenager on TikTok.
Here's the key information you need to get your homepage properly read — by actual customers, and increasingly, by AI search bots too. Realistically, your homepage only has three jobs:
Confirm the visitor is in the right place
Build enough trust to keep them scrolling
Point them at the next step
Get those three right and everything else on the page is just support work.
The images and the words
Imagery
Real photos of your actual team, premises, or work in action — not stock.
Even one decent owner-operator photo beats a polished stock image.
Keep it light and fast-loading — a beautiful photo that takes forever to load undoes itself.
And no, not a matching-denim group photo where everyone's laughing at nothing in particular. You know the one.
Words
One clear line saying what you do and who it's for — the "am I in the right place" test.
A clear next step — book, call, quote, enquire — not buried in a menu.
Contact info or location visible without scrolling, especially for local searches.
One or two trust signals — reviews, a credential, "servicing the Bay of Islands since…"
What AI search bots are looking for
AI search bots are looking for specific signals in your content and website structure — signals that tell them what's relevant, reliable, and trustworthy enough to cite. That makes sense when you think about it from their side: the more accurate and trustworthy the answers an AI tool gives, the more people will keep using it.
