Your marketing might be working. You just can't see it anymore. π
I want to start with something I've been saying to a few clients lately, because I think it needs to be said more widely:
A drop in website traffic does not mean your marketing has stopped working.
There. I said it.
And right now, with fuel prices doing their thing, investment confidence shaky, and the general sense that the world is being run by people who've never had to meet a payroll β the last thing you need is to also feel like your marketing is failing you.
So let's just take that one off the table.
What's actually going on π
Last week I talked about people turning to AI to get their questions answered. They ask Google, or ChatGPT, or even just their phone's voice assistant. They get a tidy little answer back β maybe your business name, your hours, a line about what you do. They feel confident. They pick up the phone and call you or they turn up in store.
Your website? Never visited. Your Instagram post from last week? Never seen.
But you still got the sale. And the old metrics - they just donβt capture it.
Here's the thing about uncertain times π
When the global mood is unsettled β and right now, with conflict in the Middle East pushing up fuel costs and rattling investment markets, it genuinely is β people don't stop buying. They get more careful about who they buy from and they get a little less loyal.
They do more research. They ask more questions. They check reviews. They want to feel confident before they commit.
Which means your reputation, your visibility, and the quality of the information people can find about you matters more right now β not less. A customer who's watching every dollar is not going to take a punt on a business they can't find easily or can't verify quickly.
The businesses that keep showing up β consistently, clearly, in the right places β are the ones that earn trust when trust is harder to give. That's not a small thing.
So how do you know if it's working? β
Instead of watching your traffic, watch these three things:
π€Are people searching for you by name? If someone types your business name directly into Google, they already know you exist and they're looking for you specifically. That's a warm lead. If your branded searches are holding steady or growing, your visibility is working β even if overall traffic looks flat. Check this in Google Search Console under the Performance tab.
π€Are you getting more calls, enquiries or walk-ins than your website traffic would suggest? This one's straightforward. If business feels okay but the numbers look grim, trust the business. The numbers are missing something.
π€Are your Google reviews still coming in? Reviews are one of the strongest signals that real people are finding you, choosing you, and having a good enough experience to say so. In an uncertain market, they're also one of the first things a cautious buyer will check. If that pipeline is healthy, your marketing is doing more than you think.
One thing worth doing this week β±οΈ
Log into Google Search Console (search.google.com/search-console β it's free, and if you're not set up yet, that's your one job this week). Look at your last three months of impressions β that's the number of times your website appeared in someone's search results, whether they clicked or not.
If your impressions are solid but clicks are low, that's not failure. That's just the new normal. You're showing up. People are seeing you. Some of them are acting on it in ways that don't leave a digital footprint.
Invisible wins. And right now, they count more than ever.
The bit I really want you to hear π¬
The business owners I worry about aren't the ones whose traffic is down. They're the ones who've quietly stopped posting, stopped updating their Google Business Profile, stopped asking for reviews β because they looked at their numbers, looked at the news, and thought "what's the point?"
The point is that it's working. Uncertain times don't last forever, but the reputation you build right now will. The businesses that stay visible and keep showing up β even when the mood is tough β are the ones that come out the other side with a stronger foothold than when they went in.
Keep going. And if you want a second pair of eyes on your numbers to figure out what's actually happening β you know where I am.
